ABOUT US |
| There are many styles of karate today, some old and traditional, some modern and sport orientated. The karate taught within the Shuri Karate Dojo, Shito-Ryu (pronounced shetoh-reeoo), is based upon the traditional karate of the late Okinawan karate master Kenwa Mabuni (1889-1952).
Today modern karate mainly concentrates on the sporting arena and sporting achievements. We believe concentrating solely on the practice of karate for sporting competition is against the fundamental principles and beliefs of the Martial Art. The art of karate contains the element of self-defence (Karate-Jutsu). At the Shuri Karate Dojo this element is included in our studies alongside the traditional 'Do' art. Our function at the Shuri Karate Dojo is to promote and preserve the true essence of the art of Karate and preserve its Okinawan heritage. |

Shuri Dojo Instructors | The Shuri Karate Dojo was first established in Earley near Reading in 1996 by Sensei Adam W. (Wayne) Carter to teach children and adults the martial arts discipline of Shito-Ryu karate. There are 3 classes each week for all levels and abilities. Our Dojo has a traditional approach to training, teaching techniques as they are taught in many traditional Dojo throughout Okinawa and Japan. We follow a structured syllabus to help take you from beginner to black belt and beyond. |
